Extreme Heavy Rainfall International Summer School Held

发布时间:2016-08-08

The “Extreme Heavy Rainfall International Summer School” was held in room 208 of the New Natural Science Building at Peking University (PKU) during August 2-4, 2016. It was chaired by Professor Zhiyong Meng, the associate head of the department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences. Professor Yongyun Hu, the department head, delivered the opening speech, giving a warm welcome to the participants, and wishing the summer school a great success.

Four outstanding scientists in the heavy rainfall field were invited to give lectures. They were Professor Fuqing Zhang from Pennsylvania State University, Professor Ming Xue from the University of Oklahoma, Professor Cheng-Ku Yu from National Taiwan University, and Professor Russ Schumacher from Colorado State University. The topics covered the basic theories, the frontier research progresses and the challenges on extreme heavy rainfall, including the weather and climate characteristics, formation and evolution mechanisms, the predictability, and orographic influences (Lecture Schedule see Appendix I).

Prof. Fuqing Zhang introducing the predictability of heavy rainfall

Prof. Cheng-Ku Yu talking about the formation mechanism of orographic precipitation

Prof. Ming Xue introducing the geographical distribution of extreme heavy rainfall in China

Prof. Russ Schumacher describing the ingredients of deep moist convection

This summer school attracted 296 participants from all over the country. About 50% of them were students. About 30% of the participants were from 11 universities, 30% from 15 research institutes and 2 training organizations, and the rest from operational departments. During the two and a half days of the summer school, the participants and lecturers carried out extensive discussions on related topics.

The “Extreme Heavy Rainfall International Summer School” was hosted and sponsored by the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, School of Physics, Peking University, and was co-organized by the Chinese Central Meteorological Observatory and the Chinese Meteorological Society. The main organization work was done by Professor Zhiyong Meng and Ms. Meijing Liu from PKU, and Professor Yun Chen from the National Meteorological Center. Special thanks to the student helpers Lanqiang Bai, Murong Zhang, Ruilin Zhou, Jian Yue, Yipeng Huang, Yiqi Chu, Xiaofei Li, Xiao Lu, Xiaojing Tang from PKU, Dr. Yunji Zhang and Ms. Ruoqi Gao from Pennsylvania State University, and Dr. Dan Yao from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences for their great contributions on registration, poster setups, photography and filming the lectures, conference services, etc.
