摘要:
A snowball Earth episode, a glacial period so severe that ice sheets extend to the tropics, is often considered fatal to complex life and detrimental to our planet's habitability. Survival of photosynthetic eukaryotes through the Neoproteorozoic snowball Earth episodes thus demands an explanation. Climate modeling with explicit darkening effect of dust on snow and ice shows that a snowball state may allow a narrow but stable band of tropical open water, hence could be not so deadly to life forms.
