NO2 is an important air pollutant and a precursor of climate gasses. The sources of NOx emissions can be derived and quantified from satellite observations. We have derived NOx emissions for the last 10 years using a data assimilation technique on the NO2 observations of the OMI instrument. These NO2 observations are recently reprocessed in the QA4ECV project. The changes in NOx emissions in the last 10 years have been compared to the fossil fuel consumption in China on a provincial scale. In this way the effectiveness of the Chinese air quality policies will be shown.
